RidgeRunner Publishing, LLC began in 2004 with the birth of our flagship publication, Hagerstown magazine. Our goal: to provide the local community with a relevant, fresh perspective on what it's like to live and do business in our area. Since then, our company has grown to include several custom and six regular publications, two websites and a close-knit team of employees — all of whom are bright, talented and enthusiastic about producing products that exceed expectations.
Kate Rader Kate Rader Kate Rader
Kate Rader, Owner/Publisher
Kate is known for her tenacious spirit and unwavering drive to improve the community in which she lives. For the past 10 years, she has worked to make Hagerstown magazine a frontrunner in the local media arena, while growing RidgeRunner Publishing’s portfolio to include book publishing, online marketing and creative services. Kate has provided marketing consulting, art direction and publication development for an extensive list of clients in various markets, including Clark Construction, Fannie Mae, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Hagerstown Community College and even the President of the United States. A self-proclaimed magazine junkie, Kate is an avid music lover, book reader, art creator and ice cream eater. She resides in Hagerstown and frequents the city dog park with her two pups, Aubrey and Loki.
Matt Makowski, Managing Editor
As managing editor, Matt oversees the development and actualization of all content for RRP’s magazines, including Hagerstown magazine, and all custom publications in print and online. Matt is a graduate of Rutgers University and was Time magazine's Person of the Year in 2006. When not fixing other people's mistakes, he and his wife Nicole spend their free time walking Lemmy, the crankiest Miniature Pincher in Maryland.
Chris Jackson, Director of Photography
As director of photography, Chris is key in influencing the photographic content and style of RRP’s products — managing all imagery for our magazines, websites and other projects. Chris got his start as a photojournalist while working for West Virginia University's school newspaper, and then went on to work for several dailies throughout the State. Additionally, he covers WVU football for the Associated Press and is the owner of Chris Jackson Photography. He resides in Shepherdstown, W.Va., with his wife, their cats and chickens.
Charissa Hipp, Director of Social Media and Interactive Marketing
A lifelong resident of Washington County, Charissa graduated from the University of Maryland’s College of Journalism in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Journalism-Public Relations. Looking to integrate her MARCOM skills with traditional PR and multimedia, Charissa took on the challenge of effectively developing RRP’s online communications through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest, while managing companion sites hagerstownmagazine.com and blissBride.NET. Charissa loves photography, genealogy and crafting and resides in Williamsport with her husband, two baseball-loving sons, a cat and a dog.
Dan Jae Smith, Graphic Designer
As a native of Jefferson County, W.Va., Dan Jae grew up in an artistic family, which eventually lead him to pursue a career in graphic design. After graduating from Shepherd University in 2012, he soon acquired a position at RRP, earning his place out there in “the real world.” As a jack-of-all-trades at the office, Dan Jae works on magazine layout, ad design, special projects on the side and occasionally answering general "IT" problems the staff might have with their Macs. In his free time, he usually lounges around with his cat, Chopper, who in his opinion, wins the “Cutest Cat in the World” award. You might even spot him out with coworkers in the downtown area, or visiting Shepherdstown, which he still frequents to meet up with old friends.
Jon Weaver, Contributing Graphic Designer
Jon is a 1998 graduate of Kutztown University where he received his BFA in Graphic Design. He has been a professional designer for over 15 years and has worked on a wide variety of projects in that time, winning various awards. After living for a few years in Colorado, he is back in Maryland, currently residing in Frederick. He lives with his wife Jamie, their beautiful daughter Adaire, and their Chihuahua Vivi.
