Waynesboro Hospital Through Time
Growing to Care for the Community
1922 – Volunteers establish the 35-bed Waynesboro Hospital after the Spanish flu kills 40 residents.
1939 – An addition to the hospital’s west wing accommodates 78 more beds.
1962 – A second expansion increases the bed count to 105.
1970 – The coronary care unit opens.
1972 – The 6-bed intensive care unit opens, replacing the coronary care unit.
1980 – A major renovation decreases the number of beds to 88, as the hospital trends toward more outpatient care.
1995 – The hospital joins the Summit Health family, which is also the parent organization to Chambersburg Hospital.
2008 – Waynesboro Hospital receives national recognition through Modern Healthcare magazine, which votes the facility No. 1 out of 100 for the “Best Places to Work in Healthcare.”
2009 – The hospital employs 175 physicians, more than 600 staff members and over 200 volunteers.
