We know budgets are still tight going into the New Year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t experience the exotic flavors of distant lands. HM helps you indulge your taste buds’ desire to travel by highlighting the delicious ethnic dining options available in our region. But we also recognize that indulging every now and then is a wonderful reward. So we also feature a few luxuries, large and small, and look at the ways in which they boost the spirit. And if it’s time to reward yourself by kicking the habit, we’ve taken a look at the programs and support available for quitting smoking. Learn about the progress being made by the Doleman Black Heritage Museum, which is striving for a permanent home for its priceless collection, and find out what it’s like to be a firefighter along with Assistant Editor Larissa Newman, who bravely tackled the Hagerstown Fire Department’s Fire Ops 101 program. And we address a silent epidemic — domestic violence — and learn about the local organizations helping victims escape and heal. more... |

Blues Fest Weekend.
HM staffers got the blues in the best possible way in late May — surrounded by the wailing guitar riffs and soulful vocals of the Western Maryland Blues Fest. The team manned a booth for Saturday’s Downtown House Party and the Family Blues Picnic in Hagerstown City Park on Sunday. We handed out free magazines and answered plenty of questions about things to see and do in town — all while savoring the community atmosphere that unites locals and visitors alike in the spirit of the blues.
